Great Auk

The great auk was once in abundance in the northern parts of Europe, but became another victim of man’s greed and total ignorance of nature. The mass slaughter of these birds drove them into concentrated colonies. The last of the great auk’s died in 1844.
In my painting I have shown an auk chick looking at the mother. In the distance, a sailing vessel looms over the horizon. The mother knows that it is the end of their kind. The sun goes down in sorrow, into the cold, deep, waters of the night.
